Tir-Phil Loop Drainage Survey

The Project
Tir-Phil is a small village located within New Tredegar in south Wales. In 2013, a passing loop was commissioned to be constructed to increase the frequency of which trains could pass through the station. Guided Rail were contracted to survey the existing drainage around the Tir-Phil Loop in connection with the Tir-Phil north track works that aimed to create a loop line within the Rhymney Valley.
The Problem
As part of the proposed track scheme in the Rhymney Valley, there was a need to understand the existing drainage system to assist in the development of a proposed track drainage network. The aim was to complete a drainage connectivity survey, including a site walkover, to assess the existing systems.
The Solution
Guided Rail attended the site to carry out the survey and inspect all of the culverts. The survey required that we determine the extent and condition of the drainage systems and their individual assets, note the inflows and outflows and the direction of flow of each system and survey the Outfall Invert levels. Photos were taken of all drainage catchpits, pipes and outfall locations to easily tie them back to the design drawings.

The Outcome
During the survey, a number of drainage issues were identified. These were noted and relayed back to the stakeholder. The main issue identified was that there was a significant amount of water flowing off the hillside, creating a high probability of flooding during the imminent installation of the switches and crossings. To avoid this, remedial measures needed to be undertaken in advance or during the install.
Without the walkout survey completed by Guided Rail, these issues would have gone unknown by the client and put the install at risk.
