Skelton Bridge Junction - Permanent Way Design

The Project

Skelton Bridge Junction is located just north of York on the East Coast Mainline (ELR:ECM5). Working alongside SEP Rail Services & SEP Rail Design, Guided Rail provided the perm

The Problem

The existing track at Skelton Bridge Junction required maintenance, specifically to the track’s alignment. The existing alignment required its geometry to be improved in order to maintain the line speed. Skelton Bridge Junction however was a difficult site due to the access opportunities and track quality management.

The Solution

Guided Rail worked in partnership with an existing client, SEP Rail Services & SEP Rail Design, in order to deliver a track scheme for this project. Whilst SEP Rail Services carried out the topographical survey and SEP Rail Design undertook the design management and coordination with the client, we were able to get to work on producing a permanent way design.

The solution we proposed to the client consisted of a tamping design for the up and down fast lines and the realignment of the geometry through six point ends along the track to ensure proper alignment and level. This also included associated tamping of the plain line immediately following four turnouts to ensure smooth transition along the track. This area was located below an electrified overhead line, meaning maintenance needed to be carried out safely and following correct measures.

The Outcome

This project presented challenges due to the extremely short timeline that it needed to be carried out in. By working in partnership with SEP Rail Services & SEP Rail Design, this allowed us to split the tasks required in order to complete the scheme. SEP Rail Services completed the topographic survey during week 29 whilst we developed the permanent way design during week 30, allowing for full delivery of the design to be presented to the Track Maintenance Engineer during Week 31. The scheme was successfully completed and installed the following week.
