Holgate Depot - Track and Drainage Design

The Project

Holgate Depot is located northeast of York Railway Station and is used by Network Rail to maintain their fleet of maintenance rail vehicles. It is their largest depot in the UK at 24 acres, including a 12-acre maintenance building. When Network Rail wanted to increase the capacity of the depot, Guided Rail were commissioned to carry out the track and drainage design works.

The Problem

Network Rail had recently brought Holgate Depot back into service however found that it had reached its full capacity. Therefore, they looked to extend the layout of the depot by installing two new sidings within the existing footprint. The depot however already had existing trackwork and therefore the proposed additional sidings needed to fit within the existing layout whilst the depot was operational.

The Solution

Guided Rail’s involvement in the project began by undertaking a combined Form A/B in order to produce the track and drainage designs for the expanding depot. We then commenced the designs, developing a proposed layout that retained the existing functionality of the depot whilst allowing for the additional sidings and associated drainage to be installed.

The Outcome

The depot’s expansion was successfully carried out by placing turnouts into the new sidings, maintaining the operational flexibility of the depot. Overall, two new sidings, two new turnouts and the associated track drainage were installed. Now, Network Rail has greater capacity to store, maintain and service its fleet at Holgate Depot to improve its services in order to maintain the railway.
